India will supply 5,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh today through a cross-border pipeline from the Numaligarh Refinery Limited in Assam.
The information was confirmed by Muhammad Rezanur Rahman, chairman of the Bangladesh Petroleum Corporation (BPC). He said the diesel supply is part of an agreement between the two countries.
According to the agreement, India will provide 180,000 tonnes of diesel to Bangladesh every year through the pipeline. At least 90,000 tonnes must be imported within six months.
The 5,000 tonnes arriving today is part of that supply, and officials hope the total diesel amount for the six-month period will be completed within the next two months.
On March 9, India’s ambassador to Dhaka, Pranay Verma, held a meeting with Bangladesh’s Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury and Energy Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood Tuku. During the meeting, Bangladesh also showed interest in receiving an additional optional supply of 60,000 tonnes of diesel under the agreement.
