Road Transport, Railways and Shipping Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said he was satisfied after visiting Mohakhali Bus Terminal in Dhaka on Monday before the Eid travel rush.
During the visit, he said he found no evidence of passengers being charged more than the government-approved bus fare. In some cases, passengers were even paying Tk 20 to Tk 50 less than the official fare.
The minister said transport operators sometimes reduce fares to attract passengers. Because of this, some travelers may think fares have increased when they are actually still within the approved limit.
He warned that no one is allowed to charge even one taka more than the official fare. Mobile courts and monitoring teams have been deployed at the terminal to take immediate action if any complaints are received.
He also said there is no shortage of fuel for public transport, even though there are long lines at some fuel stations. Authorities have ensured enough fuel supply for buses.
The minister acknowledged that the terminal has limited space, which sometimes causes buses to park on nearby roads. However, police, the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, transport owners, and workers are working together to manage the situation.
He also said unfit vehicles are banned from operating during the Eid travel period, and authorities are monitoring highways and garages to ensure safety.
The minister expressed hope that people will be able to travel safely and comfortably during Eid al‑Fitr, despite the large number of passengers leaving the city.
