Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hassan Mahmood has said that unpaid bills to government and private power plants in Bangladesh have reached about Tk 523 billion as of April 9, 2026.
He shared this information in Parliament while responding to a question from BNP lawmaker SM Jahangir Hossain.
According to the minister, Tk 116.34 billion of the total is owed to Petrobangla for gas bills. Another Tk 38.92 billion remains unpaid for electricity imported from India.
He also said that Tk 173.58 billion is due to gas- and fuel oil-based Independent Power Producer (IPP) plants for capacity and fuel payments. Coal-based joint venture and IPP plants are owed Tk 154.53 billion for coal prices and capacity payments.
In addition, government-owned power companies are owed Tk 56.23 billion, while Tk 1.99 billion is pending as hauling charges.
The minister further informed that power plants in the country have taken bank loans totaling Tk 1.49 trillion.
