Railways Minister Shaikh Rabiul Alam said that Bangladesh will receive 200 broad-gauge train coaches from India by December 2027.
He explained that the delivery of these coaches is expected to start within this year. The project is being funded by the European Investment Bank. All 200 coaches are planned to be added to the Bangladesh Railway between June 2026 and December 2027.
The minister shared this information in Parliament while answering a question from lawmaker Md Elias Molla.
He also said that once the new coaches arrive, authorities will decide which routes will get new or additional trains.
Currently, Bangladesh has about 3,428 kilometres of railway tracks. This includes metre gauge, broad gauge, and dual gauge lines.
The government is also working to expand the railway system by building new lines based on need and feasibility.
At present, 15 intercity trains run between Dhaka and northern districts. With the new coaches, the number of trains on some routes may increase.
In addition, the government plans to buy more trains and engines in the future to improve passenger comfort and increase income from railway services.
