Armed miscreants carried out a violent attack and looting at the residence of a Chhatra League leader in Beanibazar, reportedly over a previous enmity. The incident occurred around 11 PM on Saturday (May 17) at the house of Md. Saidul Hasan Rifat, an executive member of the Beanibazar Government College Chhatra League. Family members were severely beaten when they tried to resist the vandalism. Beanibazar police visited the scene upon receiving information. Rifat is the son of Md. Ismail Hossain from South Chariya village in Ward No. 3 of Dubag Union under Beanibazar upazila in Sylhet.
According to police sources, a group of 10 to 12 armed assailants attacked the Chhatra League leader’s house on Sunday night with sharp weapons and sticks, causing extensive damage and looting.
Locals reported that Md. Saidul Hasan Rifat had moved to the United Kingdom on December 15 last year (2024). Since the fall of the government, Rifat and his family have been subjected to various forms of harassment. It is alleged that BNP activists, driven by political vengeance, launched this attack on Rifat’s house, causing an estimated loss of Tk 2 million.
The victim and his family stated, “Around 11 PM on Sunday, leaders and activists of BNP and its affiliated organizations stormed our house with local weapons. They vandalized furniture and looted valuables, resulting in damages worth at least Tk 2 million. After the attack, the miscreants threatened to kill us. We have been living in extreme fear since the incident. Although we informed the police, they have shown little interest, leaving us feeling unsafe.”
Regarding the incident, Beanibazar Police Station Officer-in-Charge Hillol Roy said, “We visited the scene after receiving information. An investigation is underway and necessary action will be taken.”
