The High Court (HC) issued a rule on Thursday, asking the authorities involved why directions to appoint receivers to supervise Beximco Group, controlled by former prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Private Investment Affairs Adviser Salman F Rahman, were not issued, along with confiscation of its assets

A High Court bench of Justice ASKM Asaduzzaman and Justice Muhammad Mahbub-ul-Islam passed the order after hearing a writ petition submitted by Supreme Court (SC) senior lawyer Masud R Sobhan.

In the rule, the court wanted to know why directives would not be given to provide information about all organizations including Beximco Pharmaceuticals owned by the group.

Moreover, the court wanted to know why directives won’t be placed to provide information to Bangladesh Bank (BB) on how much the group owes in loans, appoint receivers to look after the group’s properties after confiscating these and bring back the group’s laundered money from abroad.

The BB governor, the finance secretary and Salaman F Rahman, who is currently under arrest, were asked to reply to the rule within four weeks.

Lawyer Masued represented himself as the petitioner, while Deputy Attorney General Redwan Ahmed and Assistant Attorney General Muzahid Islam Shaheen represented the state.
