Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its alliance have announced a list of 36 nominees for the women’s reserved seats in parliament. The names were revealed on Monday by Ruhul Kabir Rizvi during a media briefing at the party’s central office in Naya Paltan.
According to the current law, 50 reserved seats for women are distributed among political parties based on how many seats they win in the general election. Based on this system, the BNP alliance is expected to get 36 seats, while the Jamaat alliance will receive 13 and independent candidates will get one.
Although members of parliament formally vote to elect candidates for these seats, in most cases voting is not required. This is because parties usually nominate the same number of candidates as the seats they are allocated, resulting in candidates being elected unopposed.
