Allegations of Repeated Attacks on the Home of Former Chhatra League Leader Tarif Uddin in Fenchuganj; Claims of Political Vendetta

Md. Tarif Uddin, a resident of Maizgaon village in Fenchuganj upazila of Sylhet and a former active and influential youth leader of Bangladesh Chhatra League, is currently living in extreme concern over the safety of himself and his family. Allegations have emerged that he was forced to leave the country due to political persecution.

Tarif Uddin had been actively involved in the politics of Bangladesh Chhatra League since 2017. He began his political activities by serving as the Publicity Secretary of the College Branch of Chhatra League. Later, he played an active role in implementing organizational programs while holding various important positions at the local and upazila levels. Inspired by the party’s ideals, the young leader became a familiar face among students and local residents.

It is alleged that in July 2024, he was wrongfully accused in a widely discussed “genocide case” for politically motivated reasons. Following this incident, leaders and activists associated with the local BNP and Jamaat-Shibir allegedly began planned conspiracies, threats, and acts of violence against him and his family, according to family members.

According to the allegations, on March 3, 2026, at around 11:48 PM, BNP activists attacked Tarif Uddin’s house with sticks, attempted to set fire to the property, and used abusive language while threatening his parents and demanding they come out of the house. Since then, his parents have reportedly been living in constant fear for their safety. Local residents also claim that since the opposition party won the election on February 12, attempts have repeatedly been made to carry out sudden attacks against the family.

Family sources state that on July 26, 2025, at approximately 9:30 PM, Tarif Uddin’s father, Md. Nurul Islam, was seriously assaulted by local BNP and Jamaat-Shibir activists. He was severely injured in the attack. According to the family, statements from local representatives, residents, and eyewitnesses have also confirmed the incident.

In a continuation of these events, on September 10, 2025, Tarif Uddin’s elder brother, Mohammad Mobarak Hossain, was allegedly attacked when he was alone. His left arm was broken in the assault and he required medical treatment for serious injuries. Later, there was also an alleged attempt to abduct his grandson, after which he was left injured on the road with his left arm broken. The family claims that this attack was also politically motivated and pre-planned.

Following these incidents, the family says they have been receiving regular death threats and are living in extreme insecurity. According to them, although the matter has been reported to the local administration multiple times, no effective security measures have yet been ensured.

Regarding the situation, Tarif Uddin said:
“I have been involved in Chhatra League politics for many years and worked for the interests of the country and the party. But now, due to political revenge, my life and the lives of my family members are at serious risk. It is no longer safe for us to stay in the country.”

Due to the severe security risks, the former student leader says he was forced to leave the country and is currently residing in the United Kingdom. He has sought assistance from international human rights organizations and the relevant authorities to ensure the safety of himself and his family.

The family has also demanded immediate legal and administrative protection to ensure their security.
