Member of Parliament M. Naser Rahman directly presented several long-standing public demands and aspirations of the people of Moulvibazar to Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.
Speaking as a special guest at the inauguration ceremony of the third phase of the Family Card programme held at Moulvibazar Government High School Field on June 17 (Wednesday), he put forward three major and important demands.
The demands presented by MP Naser Rahman in the presence of the Prime Minister were:
Upgrading the existing Moulvibazar Sadar Hospital into a medical college without acquiring new land.
Reopening and operating Shamshernagar Airport.
Upgrading Moulvibazar Government College into a university.
Addressing the Prime Minister, he said:
“Our biggest demand is the establishment of a medical college. Honorable Prime Minister, you have already directed the establishment of medical colleges in several places. Our medical college can be developed within the existing hospital premises, requiring very little space. I have already prepared a plan and discussed it with the Health Minister. We can build a modern medical college on the current site without needing additional land. If you give the green signal, InshaAllah, work on the project can begin in the next fiscal year.”
Naser Rahman further said:
“Another major demand of the people of Moulvibazar is the reopening of Shamshernagar Airport. We are pleased that, most likely on your instruction, the Minister, State Minister, and senior officials of Civil Aviation will visit the site this Friday. As you know, Moulvibazar is home to a large expatriate population. Travelers who land in Sylhet still have to drive about two hours to reach Moulvibazar, while those arriving in Dhaka face a journey of around six hours. If the airport becomes operational, thousands of expatriates will benefit. The project can also be completed at a relatively low cost, as the runway already exists and only needs renovation along with a small terminal building. No radar installation would be required.”
He also added:
“After the airport, another important demand is to upgrade our only government college in Moulvibazar into a university. The college already has sufficient land and infrastructure to support such a transformation. These are the three major demands of the people of Moulvibazar.”
